About Sainsbury's Fuel

Sainsbury's, one of the UK's leading supermarket chains, began selling petrol and diesel in 1974 at its first edge-of-town store at Coldham’s Lane, Cambridge, Cambridge. This store was significant not only because it marked a new retail format for Sainsbury's, but also because it included a petrol station, a fresh fish counter, and a coffee shop. Initially, these fuel stations were marketed and sold under the Jet brand, but from 1980 onwards, Sainsbury's started sourcing and selling the fuel themselves under the Sainsbury's brand.

In 2004, Sainsbury's entered into a partnership with BP, where BP became the primary source for Sainsbury's petrol and diesel. This partnership lasted until 2009, when Sainsbury's took back control of its fuel sourcing and sales operations.

As of 2024, Sainsbury's operates over 300 petrol stations across the UK, making it a significant player in the fuel retail market. The company holds a 10% market share of fuels sold from UK forecourts, positioning it as one of the major fuel retailers in the country.

Sainsbury's Loyalty Scheme

Sainsbury's petrol stations are part of the Nectar loyalty program. Customers can earn 1 point for every litre of fuel purchased by scanning their Nectar card or the app during checkout. These points can be redeemed for vouchers that can be used in-store or online.

The company also offers a FuelService app that allows disabled or older customers to request assistance with fuelling their cars. This service can be accessed by downloading the app or calling the number displayed on the forecourt.
