About Tesco Fuel
Tesco, one of the UK’s largest and most recognisable supermarket chains, first ventured into fuel retail in 1973.
In 1998, Tesco strengthened its position in the fuel market by forming a strategic business alliance with Esso, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil. This partnership saw Tesco leasing several petrol filling stations from Esso, with the attached forecourt shops operated under the Tesco Express format. This collaboration brought together Tesco’s retail expertise and Esso’s established reputation in fuel distribution, creating a seamless customer experience.
As of 2023, Tesco leads the UK motor fuel market with a commanding market share of nearly 16%, outpacing competitors in both the supermarket and traditional oil company sectors. Despite having fewer petrol station sites than major oil brands like Shell, BP, and Esso, Tesco’s success is driven by its exceptionally high-volume sales per site.
Tesco operates 513 petrol stations across the UK, the largest number among supermarket chains. These forecourts are strategically located, often adjacent to Tesco’s larger stores, making it easy for customers to refuel as part of their shopping routine.
Tesco Loyalty Scheme
Tesco petrol stations are included in the Tesco Clubcard loyalty program, allowing customers to earn points on their fuel purchases. At Tesco-branded petrol stations, you earn 1 Clubcard point for every 2 litres of fuel purchased.
If you refuel at an Esso petrol station that includes a Tesco Express shop, the earning rate is slightly different—you’ll collect 1 Clubcard point for every £3 spent on fuel.
