How this is calculated
- Choose to fill your tank or to spend a set amount, and pick petrol (unleaded) or diesel.
- Fill my tank: litres needed = tank size × the part that is empty; cost = litres × price per litre.
- Spend an amount: litres = amount ÷ price per litre.
- Miles = litres ÷ 4.546 (litres in a UK gallon) × MPG.
Prices are per litre at the pump, so the cost of filling up depends on your tank size and how much is already in it. We use the latest GOV.UK weekly average unless you enter the price on the pump.
To find the cheapest place to fill up, search prices near you, or use the fuel savings calculator to see if a cheaper station is worth the drive.
Use this at the pump or before you set off: to budget a fill-up, or to see how far a set amount of fuel will take you.
Common questions
Multiply your tank size in litres by the price per litre. A typical 45-litre tank at 140p per litre costs £63 from empty. Choose how full your tank is now to see what topping it up will cost.
Divide the amount by the price per litre: £20 at 140p per litre buys about 14.3 litres. Switch to "Spend an amount" to work it out at the current average or your own pump price.
We turn the litres into miles using your MPG (UK gallons of 4.546 litres). If you leave MPG blank we use our typical-car figure, shown with your result, so enter your own for a closer estimate.
